Sometimes our PhoneSmart sales reps come up with some pretty funny stuff when we are trying to help people make their rental decisions. We normally have good directions and good landmarks on our screens so we can help people decide that the location they called is a good one. On occasion people calling are not familiar with the area they need to store in and are confused with directions.

One thing we are working on implementing is a mapping system so we can pull up a screen and give detailed directions to a caller who is not sure the location is good or not. Usually it is not a deal breaker and we can still write the reservation or set up the site tour appointment. But I heard about the funniest way to overcome this concern today.

One of our reps Laurie was talking to a caller from New York who was not sure how to get to the store she was calling. We are located in Missouri. When the caller said she wasn’t sure she should make the reservation because she was unsure of the location, Laurie told her, “I wish I could give you better directions, but I live way west of you and I’m not sure myself. I do have a few of those units still open, so I can put one on hold for you and have the site manager call you back with better directions, ok?” The caller said “Sure” and made the reservations. Score another one for our clients! Laurie said she will have to tell the California callers that she lives way to the East of them.

So don’t think there are sales situations you can’t handle. Just have some fun and get silly. You may find a great response you can use…and get a few laughs form your team members, too.
