The Spanish Rainbow
-
I am one of the bilingual representatives here in the PhoneSmart call center. So it would be no surprise to learn that I also take a lot of Spanish calls during my shifts. To me, that is one of the most exciting parts of my job because I never know what version of Spanish I’ll hear. Spanish, like English, has different dialects and rhythms depending on where the person came from. For example, the kind of vocabulary and rhythm you hear in Mexico is different from the vocabulary and rhythm from El Salvador (which is where I am from).
Sometimes the slight cultural barrier provides impedance in the communication process. The Spanish I learned from El Salvador is a little more relaxed and spoken at a slower pace than say the Spanish you hear from Cuba or Puerto Rico. Mexican Spanish has a very distinct rhythm that is almost melodic. Occasionally, the caller speaks even too fast for me to understand. Then it’s just a matter of calming them down and telling them to slow down so that I can help them. But I think it’s a great opportunity that even within my own culture, there are different aspects, different dialects, and different words that vary so dramatically from what I grew up with. When I ad in the legal terms and other phrases that I must speak in English it makes the conversation about self storage even more challenging. I must listen, interpret, and use the sales techniques all at once. Whew! Multi tasking! Or multi tareando!
