The Bells and Whistles of Self Storage

  • Over 11 million households in America use some sort of self storage facility . The reasons for storing needs range from moving, to renovating, to wanting to have extra space for their business. This industry is a 22 billion dollar a year industry and it is growing every year. With so many different facilities in your area why is one any better than the other? Have you ever just taken the time to call around and see what each facility says about themselves? That would be an interesting thing to do and then see if these places really are as different as they say.

If you know anything about this industry, you know that the various self storage facility locations have similar features. You will also notice that some facilities do not offer some of the extensive features that others do. We will go over what these different features mean to you and you can then see which ones you actually care about.

    24 hour access

With a self storage facility having 24 hour access, this means that you have the ability to enter and exit the self storage facility at any time of the day. Not all facilities have this option because they believe that most customers do not need access for 24 hours a day. They are right. We all know sometimes you forget something and you absolutely need it, then you can go by the facility and pick it up.

    Access Controlled Gate

Before you are allowed into the facility, there is a gate that only allows access to those people who had filled out the necessary paperwork to have a rental space. When that paperwork is complete, then the tenant will be given a pin code that will open the gate, giving them access to the facility. This is one of the most common security features because the gate will not open if you have not paid on your space, it is after access hours or if you do not have a rental space at the facility.

    Door Alarms

This is a great security feature that prevents people from getting into your space. Even if for some reason a person jumps over the access controlled gate, an alarm will sound if they are trying to get into your space. The door alarm is deactivated when you punch in your code at the access controlled gate.

    Camera Surveillance

Most facilities have cameras posted all over their facility that monitor the facility. Now one thing you will want to ask the manager or associate when you call is if the cameras are being recorded or just monitored. Sometimes places just have cameras on the property that are active and run but need to have someone watching them to make a difference. Unfortunately when the facility is closed and someone breaks into your space, there will not be anyone that can see it happen. That is why you need a place that has the cameras recording at all times.

    Well Lit Facility

Sometimes you will want to visit the facility at night and you want to feel safe. Most times you will feel comfortable at night anywhere you go if it is well lit where you are.

An extensive line of moving and storing supplies

Many facilities brag about being a one stop shop for their storing needs. The great thing about that is that you can go to one place to tackle anything you could need to make your storing situation work. They will have anything from mattress covers, to locks, to bubble wrap. Before you start packing your belongings up to put into a storing space, call around to see if the self storage facility you want to store at has some supplies on sale.

As you are looking for that self storage facility in your area, find out which features or feature you care about and ensure that they have it there for you.
