States unite

  • Welcome to the self storage blog. Today’s meeting of the affiliated associations of the self storage association was an interesting one. There were about 16 state associations represented, as well as the Canadian storage association and several unaffiliated states.

Much of the day was an overview of the benefits of affiliation. Most of the people present were looking for help growing their associations and were looking for help on legislative and regulatory issues.

The Self Storage Association seems to have a lot to offer in these regards in particular.

There was also discussion of assistance in conference programs, education sessions and distribution of information. Clearly the Self Storage Association has put a lot of thought and effort into designing benefits for affiliation.

It seems inevitable that the states will all affiliate with the national association to work together and coordinate activities to further the industry. It also seems likely that other national associations might see fit, as the Canadians did, to align with the SSA. As the storage business develops in Central and South America, we might see operators in those countries use the SSA to help coordinate and cooperate.

Some states will not affiliate so quickly as there are considerations in coming under the SSA umbrella. We’ll see how it develops.
