Most of the self storage facilities have access controlled gates and many use security cameras, door alarms. Most self storage properties are fenced and lighted. Some self storage facilities have manager who lives on the site. Some offer inside parking, wine storage, trucks for rental and private mail boxes.

Some self storage facilities offer climate controlled storage units to prevent moisture problems. Climate controlled storage units are recommended for temperature sensitive items like leather furniture, art, antiques, or computer equipment.
