Self Storage Is Unpredictable

I have worked in a lot of businesses and industries that were predictable. You could pretty much guess when you would be busy and when things would be slower by looking at the trends for the season. For instance, at retail store you knew you would be busy when it was back to school time and during Christmas. I worked at bottled Water Company where we were always busy in the summer time and slowed down during winter months. I also work at a call center for carpet cleaning. That was pretty much busy during the summer and around the holidays.

But I can’t seem to get a handle on self storage. I do the work schedule for the PhoneSmart call center. We take calls for self storage facilities all over the United States. And I cannot ever guess correctly when will be busy.

During summer time it is a given that people are moving, and students need self storage for the summer until school starts again. But getting the schedule right for a week or even a month is tough. Sometimes we are busy in the beginning of the month or at the end of the month. Sometimes not, sometimes the day will start out really busy then it will slow down, but it also could stay busy all day. There are times in January it is busy and we wonder what is going on. You would think it is too cold do any moving. But will we get those calls.

I have tried for at least two years to get the schedule right I just cant do it. I can’t ever guess it right. So that is why I say, “storage is unpredictable”.

I wonder if there is a list self storage secrets that I do not know about or maybe there is a storage insider diary, that tells other companies but does not let me know. Well if you are out there please let me know because storage is unpredictable business to me.
