Self Storage Building Materials

  • Self storage buildings can be made using different materials. The most common materials that are used are steel and wood. Earlier wood used to be in great use, but now steel is being used more commonly, as wood seems to be dearer than steel. But both have their advantages and disadvantages. Firstly, wooden storehouses when exposed to the outside environment seem to rot owing to atmospheric humidity. On the other hand, even steel, when not given adequate protection is vulnerable to corrosion. Both wooden and steel structures need to be painted or given a protective coating on their surfaces to endure the harmful effects of atmospheric humidity.

One of the major drawbacks of wooden self storage buildings is that, they are vulnerable to attack by termites, whereas steel storehouses are not. A major advantage of investing on steel storehouses is that one can get attractive insurance benefits on these storehouses because they are not all that vulnerable to destruction by accidents like fire. Wood on the other hand, is highly vulnerable to fire accidents and hence the insurance companies are reluctant to make highly beneficial policies on wooden storehouses.

Another reason for wood not being commonly used these days for construction of storehouses is that it is very expensive. While constructing self storage buildings with wood, the trusses have to be laid in close proximity to each other as wood can carry very less snow load in comparison to steel. In the case of steel, the trusses can be placed farther apart. As more number of trusses are required to erect a wooden storehouse, the erection expenses shoot up very much in comparison to the erection expenditure for steel storehouses.

In the case of wooden constructions there is no overhead room on the trusses but in the case of steel constructions there is enough room. Steel scores over wood in another major aspect and that is steel structures are more durable than wooden structures. This is the reason why many people are opting for steel storehouses in the recent times. But when it comes to the looks part, wooden self storage buildings definitely score over the steel ones. They come in a lot elegant designs. Many aristocratic traditional houses are matched with beautifully designed wooden storehouses to complement the ambience.

There are certain things that one must consider before buying storehouses, whether they are made of wood or steel. The storehouse should be constructed or bought according to the specifications of the constructions in a given area. The code of the construction along with the maximum amount of wind load and live load a construction can take should be obtained and the storehouse constructed in compliance with the construction.

In the next step, a list of all the items that are required for making the construction should be made and then presented to the manufacturer. The terms and conditions for the construction of the self storage buildings should be written out. Nothing should be finalized in a verbal mode because there is a chance of either party taking advantage of such an agreement later on. The entire plan for the construction should be present in a methodical and detailed format before starting the construction. The pros and cons of the design should be thought out beforehand as making modifications later on can be quite a complicated task, as the changes made in one part affect the entire construction.
