Say Hello To The World

  • Sam April, multi-lingual PhoneSmart call center operator speaks out about building rapport.

Welcome to the PhoneSmart self storage blog, the insider diary of the self-storage industry.

Finding something in common with a caller can often be the most important part of your sales techniques. I have often found that customers are far more likely to reserve a storage unit when they feel like you are on the same level as they are. By doing this you can create a common comfort level that even eases whatever concerns about storage a customer might have. One of my favorite ways to do this is to find out where a customer is from and if I can spit out a phrase or two in their own language. I got a reservation just this week from a man named Port. I looked at the name and noticed that accent and it was obvious to me that it was Russian. I asked him if he was Russian and found out he was Ukrainian (they speak Russian). I responded by saying private cog dial? (Hello how are you?). We shared a laugh, I told him all the other words in Russian I knew, and then took down his credit card for a reservation for his self storage .
Throughout my life I have always made it a point when I meet people from other countries to ask how to say something as simple as how to count to 10 or say “hello how are you.” Here is a list of what I know so far, it might not even be a bad idea to print it out and have it sitting around on your desk.
