One other trend that needs to be watched is the local/regional brand. In downstate New York, you find Guardian Self Storage. They have about 6 properties or so within about an hour and a half driving radius. This is happeining in many areas. If self storage is a local purchase, then growing in a local area like this makes your business area large enough to fill many units. It gives you multiple drive-by exposure which makes your brand seem even larger. It maximizes your yellow page dollars and puts you in the position to benefit from local print, radio and cable advertising. It allows you to make billboard advertising work. It allows you to be big in a market that might not be that interesting to the “Major” companies.
South of Dallas, Texas you find Cornerstone storage that has three or four locations within a twenty minute driving area. They are buidling a local brand as well.
