Location Really is Everything In Self Storage

  • If you do a search on the Internet about self storage you will get many, many results, I wanted to see what would come up if I searched weird self storage. Here are some of the stories I came across on the Internet.

A well known drug smuggler picked a New York self storage location to hide 35 pounds of marijuana. This self storage business has two entrances, one regular and one it shares with the lobby entrance to the Drug Enforcement Agency. DEA agents actually smelled the scent of marijuana and sent in drug sniffing dogs that walked right up to the smugglers locker. The smuggler has been flying under the DEA’s radar for more than 3 decades.

A pickup truck parked in a self storage unit backfired igniting the unit which sent smoke into the adjoining 12 units, with 5 suffering fire damage. The incident is under investigation.

A small plane crashed into a self storage facility in Branson, MO. Unfortunately 4 people aboard the plane did not survive. If the plane had come down 200 feet in another direction it would have crashed into a large well known museum, a pair of motels or a string of music theatres, all of which were packed full of people.

Two children are in state custody after the children’s mother locked them in a self storage unit before going to work at a nearby fast food chain. The mother told authorities that she did not know where else to take her children while she was at work.

Most self storage facilities have specific rules and regulations on what you can and cannot put into your storage unit. Please check with your own self storage company on their storage rules.
