How To Describe Storage Unit Sizes

  • I was listening to a co-worker on the phone trying to make a self storage reservation.  The customer was not certain of the size and couldn’t picture the space. The co-worker told the lady to look at the corner of her wall and go six feet then go out five feet and that’s how big the unit is.  Well if the woman is anything like me, she would be thinking that doesn’t help any. What does six feet look like? This co-worker has room in this area to better her sales techniques, then maybe she would have made a reservation and not just a lead.

When working in a call center, you should remember that everyone is different so you should explain size in a matter that everyone would understand. Most of our employees would compare the size of a unit to a house. For example, the size of a 5×10 is like a large closet or a 5×15 is like a large walk-in closet, which is also equal to 132 standard boxes, etc. I would be able to understand that a lot better than being told to look at the corner and go six feet. You should also make sure that the customer understands what you are explaining.  The better the customer understands, the better the chance to get a reservation.
