Cost of gas changing storage buying?

  • Welcome to the self storage blog, our diary of the self storage business.

We are noticing the beginning of a change in consumer behavior. The cost of gasoline is starting to make it too costly to drive to a storage place to look at it before renting. So guess what? People are using their phones more than they used to to shop before they buy. This is not just wishful thinking on my part, hoping that more people use the phone more, so we can take more phone calls and create more value for our clients. We have heard this from a few shoppers on the phone when we have helped them make a storage decision. We have heard it from our sales evaluators who monitor phone calls and have heard people talking about it.

I don’t know if you are starting to see this yourself. When people are driving by your place anyway, the cost of pulling in your driveway may not be much for the buyer to think about. But if they have to go out of their way at all, especially if they drive a gas guzzler, they are going to start heading home and driving the least miles possible.

This happened to me personally yesterday. My family was going to meet my up for dinner. My portion of the clan got there a little early. We were tempted to drive around for a few minutes to look at a new shopping center coming up or to just go over to the park and back. But we decided that at almost $3.00 a gallon in our big vehicle that gets only about 13 miles a gallon, that we better go park in the restaurant parking lot and sit in the vehicle and visit while we waited.

Be on the look out for your phone to ring more than it used to

    Bye for now, Tron
