The climatic factors that have an affect on stored items are temperature and humidity. Apart from this, the environmental pollutants, the environmental weather fluctuations, and the environmental microorganisms all have an effect on the items that are placed in the warehouse. The seasonal variations have the greatest influence on the items in the storehouses. Extremely high and cold temperatures have a detrimental effect on wooden and metallic furniture. Very high humidity can make iron rust and wood decay. In cases of very low humidity it can dry up wood. Packing for environmentally regulated storehouses differs from packing for normal storehouses in a number of ways. On a general note, it is more convenient to pack for the storehouses with environmental regulation, because one does not have to take special care. Considering the packing of wooden articles, one needs to take some precautions when sending the item to storehouses with no environmental regulation. The wooden surface needs to be waxed for protection against excessive humidity. Even metallic items, when not placed in climate controlled self storage need to be painted for protection against corrosion and rusting owing to excessive humidity. The items should not be packed in plastic bags as atmospheric moisture can get collected in the bags and damage the articles inside. When storing mattresses it is advisable to store them in mattress bags made of cloth or paper so that atmospheric moisture does not spoil the choir or cotton inside the mattress. In places of high humidity even the walls of the storehouse may gather droplets of moisture and hence any item should not be placed against the walls.

If one opts to place his furniture in a climate controlled self storage area, he need not take so many precautions against environmental humidity. He just gives a basic protection to his items by covering it with paper or cloth cover and put it in the storing area.

• When packing electronic items special care has to be taken when these are put in chambers that are not environmentally regulated. It is always better to pack electronic goods in the boxes and packaging in which they originally come in, when purchased. It has to be borne in mind, that high temperatures are detrimental to electronic goods as they cause warping. Putting electronic items in climate controlled self storage eliminates the risk of their being damaged by extreme temperatures.

• Metallic items expand during extremely high temperatures and contract during extremely low temperatures. This can develop weak points in the structure of the metallic items and they might get distorted in shape. Items that are placed in storehouses with no temperature regulation will suffer damages whereas those that are kept in chambers with temperature regulation will remain intact during seasonal extremities.

• Preserving clothing can also be problematic in storehouses where humidity is not controlled because one has to protect the metallic rods that are used for hanging clothes from rusting, by painting it. By opting for climate controlled self storage no special care needs to be taken to protect the rods.

Using environmental regulation to store valuable household articles is a good option but it is pretty expensive.
