There are so many reasons why people need car storage. Where should we start? The reason we get most often is for the winter. There are people who have a sports car and want storage for it for the winter. They do not want to drive it in the bad weather. There are customers who put their car in storage during the winter for the fact of not wanting to get it dinged up or wrecked during the bad weather. These of course are for the states that get a lot of snow and ice.
 
We know not much snow happens in southern California. We often get calls about car storage in California because of deployment. There are a few military bases in California and troops fighting for our country need car storage while they are deployed. It may be because their base does not have storage for their car or has no room left.  They will look for storage elsewhere. These calls are tough because you know where they are going and you hope they come back safe to drive their car again.

The best reason is when parents call and want car storage for their teenager. Sometimes they have abused the rules and the parents take their car away and put it in storage. It use to be that parents would just take the keys away. Now they are putting vehicles in car storage.  It really makes you wonder what those kids did. Sorry for the kids for whose parents read this blog and got an idea about what to do with their car when they break the rules.

There are all kinds of car storage. There is outside storage, which means you would park it in a secured lot. There is also inside storage. This is like storing a car in your own garage. That is for the sporty cars or the ones who really baby their cars. The outside storage is a secured lot at most locations. How important is the appearance of a self storage facility, very important.

Looks are very important when it comes to self storage.  The way the outside of a self storage facility looks can either make or break a rental.  Someone seeking self storage, aside from making sure the facility is safe and in a convenient location, will want to make sure aesthetically the facility works for them.  Besides location being important to customers making sure that the outside of the facility is clean and attractive is a selling factor also. 

This may sound absurd but by driving by a self storage facility and the building is decrepit or that is it looks like it is falling apart and the paint is chipping away, I will probably not want to stop.  Now the aesthetics of the facility outside may or may not necessarily constitute what type of a self storage facility is being run.  Sure, the facility may be very clean an organized once inside, but if the outside of the self storage facility is not as clean and organized, someone driving by who originally had planned to stop and look at the facility, may not know that the office and even the storage units themselves are actually clean and rather nice.  Making sure the outside main office building where a prospect tenant will eventually go into and rent or where the current tenant comes in to pay their rent.  Having some minor landscape work outside always helps enhance the self storage facility grounds.  There is  that old cliche, never judge a book by its cover, however we know we all do, regardless of whether we mean to or not.  Monthly rental rates at an appealing self storage facility can be a bit higher and a tenant will not mind paying a few extra dollars per month if the facility is pleasant to the eye.  If a caller states they do not care what the facility looks like, they are kidding themselves or are trying to convince one that they do not care what the facility looks like.  In truth, a caller will mention how they drove by a facility and were very impressed at how the facility looked, without even going inside yet.   They will state that they could tell just by looking at the outside of the self storage facility it is a place they would not think twice about stopping at and renting a storage unit right there and then.  If a building and its immediate surroundings are pleasant to look at, the viewer will assume the self storage facility is safe and clean.  A storage unit is like a second garage for renters, except this second garage is not physically located at their place of residence but on the premises of the self storage facility.  When someone needs to go to their storage unit, they want to make sure it is safe, secure, clean and pleasant to look at.

I was listening to a self storage call today from one of our clients and I started to giggle a little bit. The self storage manager told the caller that if she wanted an outside unit that she would have to shovel the snow away from the door in the winter. What? The first thing I said to myself is why would you tell a prospective customer that they will have to shovel snow to get into their storage unit. Well, as the call went on the manager went on to explain that the snow plows come through and get as close as they can to the buildings but that there is always some snow piled in front of the doorways. This made more sense but I still was not getting the whole picture. Then the manager went on to say that the office always has a shovel that the current self storage tenants can use to get to their units. That made me feel better, but I just kept wondering why the self storage property manager could not figure out a better way to keep the snow out from the doors and then provide great customer service. Maybe this self storage location should rethink their snow removal plans for something more customer friendly.

Our area is expecting some snow as the day goes on. It’s always interesting to see the first snow and how people react to it. Depending on the forecast on how bad the weather will be depends on how busy our local gas stations and grocery stores will be. Some people get a little panicked and stock up on food and gas. This is a good idea if we are going to have a blizzard but I typically do not do these things. My freezer has enough leftovers and food to last more than a few days and if the weather is really bad I do not need to be driving in it anyway so why get a bunch of gas?

What do you need to do to your self storage property to get it ready for the first snow? Are your driveways clear of obstruction? Are you roofs in good repair and ready for the snow? There are only 42 days till Christmas; do you have your shopping done? It’s not too late to inquire about a small self storage unit to hold your Christmas presents. Many people find it handy to rent a self storage unit over the holidays or winter months to help with decluttering and storage of items that aren’t needed in the colder months. Most self storage businesses have a small size like a 5×5; this is considered to be like a small closet size. Add in a 7-10 foot ceiling and you can pack a lot into this small unit. Some self storage companies have an even smaller unit like a 5x5x5, which you cannot walk into unless you are shorter than 5 foot tall. So, depending on how many gifts and how large the gifts are depends on what size storage unit you will need. When you call to ask about self storage rates, the person answering the phone should be able to help you figure out the best size to fit your needs. The manager should ask what items you will be storing and about how large the items are. By fitting into the smallest size you can it will save you money as the smaller the unit the smaller the price, typically. Most self storage companies also rent by the month, either by the calendar month or the anniversary month, so you can rent short term and not be locked into a formal lease.

Callers often ask me what the difference is between the two types of spaces, and what the pros and cons of each are. Here is a brief synopsis of what I tell them.

Climate controlled storage buildings use equipment to heat the units in the wintertime and cool them in the summer. These facilities typically manage a temperature range of 50 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit, and help to maintain a humidity level of less than 55%. These conditions help to prevent mold and mildew, as well as assist in pest control. 

Anyone storing for a long period of time, or that will be spending a great deal of time in their unit, will definitely want a climate controlled unit. For people storing a short time, here are several examples of when a climate controlled unit might be considered:

• Electronic and computer equipment
• Clothing
• Mattresses and bedding
• Important papers and files
• Leather and/or wood furniture
