Being Proactive In Business

  • I am reporting from Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico. A week or so ago when I left the call center for self storage in Columbia, MO, I was just a little concerned that I may not be able to fly into Denver on Friday morning. Denver was expecting another snowstorm anywhere from 18 inches to 3 feet of snow. Each year I take vacation around the holidays I fly to Denver from Kansas City, MO, and from Denver I fly to Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico.

I started my day at 4am on Friday Dec. 29, 2006 so that I could ride the shuttle from my hotel to the airport. At 4:30am I checked out of my hotel and waited for the shuttle. While I was waiting for the shuttle I asked the front desk clerk at the hotel to check on my flight. I could tell by the look on the clerk’s face the news was not good. My ¨6:30am flight from KCMO to Denver was canceled. I decided to move forward with my plans and take the shuttle to the airport. I arrived at the airport not knowing what to expect.

When I arrived at the Frontier terminal there were 2 people ahead of me. I could over hear the conversation and it was not good. I could hear them talking about planes being full and trying to reroute everyone. It was my turn; the clerk looked at me and asked what your final destination is? I looked at her and said Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico. The next words I hear are that here “could be a problem”. I gave the clerk my tickets and passport. The clerk reviewed my tickets and looked up at me and said “you have already been rerouted let me get you some paper tickets”. The clerk stated it will take 3 legs but I should be in Mazatlan by 1:30pm today. At that point it didn’t matter to me how many flights I had to take to reach my final destination. I asked the clerk “when did you start on the rerouting process”? She stated,” yesterday”.

That is a perfect example of being proactive. All of us who work in PhoneSmart Call Center need to be proactive on a daily basis so that we can better service our self storage clients.
