Accommodating the Handicapped Client
-
Mary, PhoneSmart call center operator joins our discussion about handicapped access.
Welcome to the PhoneSmart call center blog and diary of the self-storage industry.
Isn’t it interesting that we don’t think about the restrictions that someone has until we are in their shoes or hear about their special needs?Today I received a call from a lady who is 1/2 Handicapped as she put it. As I was giving her the location of the unit, (an interior unit), she told me that she had a problem walking and wanted to know how far down the hall she would have walk. Of course I tried to get a reservation, but I can see where she was coming from when she refused. I looked for something that was drive up accessible, but nothing available. I went ahead with the hot lead explaining that the manager could call her back with specific information about the site and also invited her for a site visit. I also let the manager know in the notes that if one is coming available that is easier to access, to let her know that too.I have not received very many of these types of calls, however when I do, I try to put them at ease and let them know that I understand that they need conveniences that will help them out as much as possible. I look for units that will benefit them 1st, but also give those options of upper units as well and let them make the choice, unless they have specifically asked for the easiest unit to get into. Since I am not at the site, I’m blind as to the layout of the facility, but I try to assist them the best I can, trying to see things from their point of view. I make sure to let the manager know what the handicap is, such as hard of hearing, and so on. It just makes it easier for the manager to know how to communicate and accommodate that customer. I’m sure the customer appreciates that as well.Storage Concierge Self Storage in Georgia
